Brochures and information are available in the Visitors’ Centre, which houses our Donkey Shop and Eseltjiesrus Bistro.
The Visitor Centre and toilets are wheelchair-friendly.
From time to time entry into the fields will be suspended, to give the donkeys a break from human interaction, and when weather conditions are unfavourable. Thank you for understanding.
Please talk to our guides in the Visitors’ Centre on your arrival and they will advise you.
Our new Bistro opened on Thursday 13 June.
The Bistro is open from 10am to 4pm - Thursdays to Sundays and is situated in the Visitors’ Centre.
The Bistro provides you, the visitor, with a place to relax and enjoy good homebaked food and a range of beverages overlooking our dam and the paddocks.
We offer a range of light meals, including platters, weekly specials, frittatas, toasted sandwiches as well as scones, muffins, cheesecake, teas, coffees, juices and milkshakes. We cater for both vegetarian and vegan choices.
We are licensed so you can enjoy a glass of Eseltjiesrus Wine with your meal or a Saggy Stone Craft Beer. You may also bring your own wine, we do not charge corkage.
The Bistro accepts both credit and debit cards (MasterCard and Visa) as well as Zapper and SnapScan.

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is situated just 5kms outside the village of McGregor on the road between Robertson and McGregor on the edge of the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. We are 15kms from Robertson. Watch for the direction signs as you approach Tanagra Winery.

We welcome groups to the Sanctuary and ask that you contact us beforehand so that we can arrange for someone to meet you and explain our work to you.
There is a nominal charge for commercial groups.
We welcome school visits and offer a varied programme which includes educational activities about donkeys and caring. Each visit is carefully planned with the teachers of the school to ensure that it relates to the curriculum. We also recommend that teachers and learners make use of the Teacher Resource Pack prior to and after the visit to ensure an enhanced learning opportunity.
