Opening hours

We are open 10am to 4pm Thursdays to Sundays.

Please report to one of our Visitor Guides on arrival in front of the Visitor Centre.

Our Coffee Shop is open - see Coffee Shop for details.

Brochures and information are available in the Visitor Centre, which houses our Donkey Shop and Book Store.The Visitor Centre and toilets are wheel chair-friendly.

From time to time entry into the fields may be suspended, to give the donkeys a break from human interaction, and when weather conditions are unfavourable. Thank you for understanding.

Our Coffee Shop is open from 10am to 4pm - Thursdays to Sundays and is situated in the Visitor Centre.

The Coffee Shop provides you, the visitor, with a place to relax and enjoy some interesting snacks and a range of beverages overlooking our dam and the paddocks.

Our current menu includes light meals such as toasted sandwiches as well as scones, muffins, cheesecake, teas, coffees, juices and milkshakes. We cater for both vegetarian and vegan choices.

We are licensed and you can enjoy a glass of Eseltjiesrus Wine or a Saggy Stone Craft Beer whilst at the Sanctuary in the Coffee Shop overlooking the dam. You may also bring your own wine, we do not charge corkage. You can purchase our wines and Saggy Stone craft beer for off-site consumption. You can also order our wines for courier delivery by looking at "Buy our wine" (under "How you can help").

The Coffee Shop accepts both credit and debit cards (MasterCard and Visa) as well as Zapper and SnapScan.

How to find us

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is situated just 5kms outside the village of McGregor on the road between Robertson and McGregor on the edge of the Klein Karoo in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. We are 15kms from Robertson. Watch for the direction signs as you approach Tanagra Winery.

Group Visits

We welcome groups to the Sanctuary and ask that you contact us beforehand so that we can arrange for someone to meet you and explain our work to you.

There is a nominal charge for commercial groups.

School Visits

We welcome school visits and offer a varied programme which includes educational activities about donkeys and caring. Each visit is carefully planned with the teachers of the school to ensure that it relates to the curriculum. We also recommend that teachers and learners make use of the Teacher Resource Pack prior to and after the visit to ensure an enhanced learning opportunity.
