Vision

Promoting the welfare and status of donkeys through a culture of caring

 

Mission

To achieve this vision Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary will:

  1. promote the welfare of all donkeys through:
    1. promoting best practice in terms of the care and handling of donkeys
    2. engaging with donkey owners and professional animal carers to improve levels of care and eliminate abuse and maltreatment
    3. networking with organisations and individuals through the sharing of expertise and experience
    4. advocating and lobbying with relevant parties to implement good welfare practices and legislation and in the process strengthen our role as a legitimate stakeholder in donkey welfare

  2. provide permanent refuge and care for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys in the Western Cape through:
    1. the Sanctuary in McGregor being a centre of excellence for donkey care
    2. ensuring that the Sanctuary is run in an ethical and impeccable manner
    3. developing and supporting a variety of initiatives that provide refuge and care for donkeys elsewhere in South Africa

  3. raise the status of donkeys so that they are recognized as the worthy creatures that they are through:
    1. educating the wider public through media, events, materials, workshops and direct contact with donkeys under supervision of our trained staff
    2. working with other organisations, groups, individuals, sanctuaries and agencies to promote the welfare and status of donkeys
