Message from the custodians
Caring for rescued donkeys is a rewarding task. Once they understand that they are in a safe haven they grow in confidence and joyfulness. We undertake to care for them for the rest of their days. This makes it no easier when the time comes when they need us the most: to ease them into a gentle death, to spare them suffering and distress and to give a dignified end to the best years of their lives. Recently we bade farewell to two rescued residents who had been with us from our inception: sweet scruffy little Thabo, and much-loved Eeyore, the incarnation of many a childhood imagining. Thank you to all who loved and supported them. We miss them sorely. RIP Thabo and Eeyore. Your memories live on. |

Developments at the Sanctuary |
||
| The farm relies on boreholes for drinking and irrigation water, and gets a limited supply of “leiwater” from the mountain catchment area. Currently there are two active boreholes barely coping with the carefully managed demand. A third old borehole was examined and the water found to be unsuitable for our use. A new borehole is being drilled to augment the best two. Fitting it with electricity and a secured pump will follow. This is an expensive undertaking but is essential to ensure acceptable grazing for our herd. At the same time we are undertaking extensive rehabilitation of our fields which have been in constant use for the last five years. Two new fields are under development: a smaller one for “special needs” donkeys like Bella and Popeye, and a larger one for general use by the herd. A shelter is essential in every field – further expense. Thank you to all who have donated to the shelter fund – we are nearly there! |

Little Bosch Pre-Primary School in Cape Town is again sponsoring four donkeys. Each class adopts a donkey for a year and contributes towards caring for their donkey, whilst learning about responsible and compassionate animal care. Humane Education in action! We invite other schools to do the same. It is a most gratifying project for the children and the donkeys. Any level of contribution is welcomed. Die gemeente van die Nederduits Hervormde Kerk Culembeeck in Roodepoort het twee donkies aangeneem – baie welkom en baie dankie vir julle deernis vir hierdie nederige diere. Kom kuier gerus as julle hier naby is. We invite more church congregations to support donkey welfare. |

Can you help? |

Our little family of three foster donkeys in Wellington needs a new loving home – can you help? Eddie and Patsy and their son Jasper are closely bonded and must stay together. Please contact us if you can offer a foster home to them – we will send you information and arrange a visit to discuss this. Can you help us keep up with some admin tasks? If you live in or near McGregor and can donate a few hours once a month, we would love to hear from you. We need a small desk (three-drawer) for our new Farm Foreman. If you no longer need yours please let us know. We can fetch it if you live fairly close by. |

You are automatically a member if you are an active adopter, donor or volunteer. This makes you eligible to vote at the AGM to ensure good governance. Donkeys for Africa is an independently-funded communication portal promoting donkey welfare throughout Africa. Regular newsletters are published on the website and there is a resource section in the library Also please visit and “like” the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/donkeysforafrica/ for regular updates. Adoptions: These contributions form the backbone of our running costs related to donkey care and well-being. Adoption gives you a special interest in a particular donkey at the sanctuary and at the same time enables you to act as a Donkey Ambassador. Photos and certificates of our adopted donkeys are displayed in many offices and homes throughout the world. Children love following the progress of their adopted donkeys and learn compassion and responsibility at the same time. Adoptions make a perfect gift: from the comfort of your computer you can order the gift, we will send all the information to both you and the recipient so you share in the delight of the gift. Please visit https://www.donkeysanctuary.co.za/how-you-can-help to treat yourself or solve your gift-giving problems quickly and easily. As a registered PBO we issue tax certificates after the end of our financial year at the end of February. Our adopters and donors can expect their tax certificates in April 2019. |
