Message from Amy

Hee haw and hello everyone! I am Amy and I have lived at Eseltjiesrus for eight years now. I came from a rescue home where they loved me so very much that I was spoilt with all sorts of food and snacks, causing me to become overweight. Here at the Sanctuary I lead a more natural life, in large fields with lots of herd activity and a wholesome donkey-appropriate diet. I have slimmed down beautifully over the years and now, because of my age, even get a bowl of yummy nutritious meal twice a day. However my joints have taken a beating with all the extra weight that I carried for so long and I have arthritis as well as unbalanced hips. The humans give me a supplement to ease the aches. In the picture I am enjoying a gentle touch therapy from lovely Anne. Thank you for supporting the Sanctuary and helping donkeys like myself and many who are less fortunate.

Good governance

Eseltjiesrus is governed by a Board of highly competent people who give freely of their time and expertise to ensure impeccable running of the Sanctuary.

At the latest Board meeting in November, Anthony Coombe stepped down as Chairperson after serving with great distinction for eight years. Anthony led from the front and was fair, friendly and firm in all actions. The very good news is that he will continue to head the Audit and Risk Committee.

At the Board meeting Johan van Zijl was elected as the Chairperson. Board membership now comprises the following: Johan van Zijl (Chairperson), Anthony Coombe, Carole Hambleton-Moser, Jim McNamara, Johan du Preez, Louise Matschke, Mariana Rabie, Sarah Kvalsvig, Tony Saddington, Ton Vosloo and Annemarie van Zijl.

News snippets

The St Francis Day and Remembrance Ceremony on October 7th was a most peaceful and meaningful event. About 80 people with many dogs, enjoyed beautiful music, a profound message by Rev Alan Makin and the blessing of animals by Brother Richard. Thank you to all who joined us.

Graaff Reinet workshop
In September we presented a workshop on “One Health, One Welfare and The Hand Welfare assessment” in Graaff-Reinet. This is accredited with three Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points if you are registered with the SA Veterinary Council. We plan to repeat this workshop in 2019. If you are interested in us offering this workshop or similar in your area, do contact us to discuss where and wLogos Schoolhen.  We will travel to you if possible.

Learners from the Logos School spent time with our donkeys – we always enjoy their annual visits.

Young warriors
The McGregor Young Warriors and Angels, a cycling upliftment group, did a training ride to the Sanctuary and we treated them to breakfast before introducing them to the donkeys.

We also received a group from the Great Drak Wine Club for a delicious breakfast buffet – do return and spend more time!

We were delighted to have a stand at the gala Dancers Love Dogs fund-raising show at Artscape. Dancers love Donkeys too – they have adopted a donkey and produced a
Elilovely video of their photo-shoot at the Sanctuary with our donkeys.

A very young donkey foal was found next to its mother who had been killed by a vehicle, near Musina. A Donkey Angel took the little fellow home and consulted us about correct feeding. We are happy to report that little Eli is doing well.

We need a knowledgeable, long-term home for a family group of three healthy donkeys that are in foster care. The farm where they have been cared for eight years, is for sale. Please contact us at info@donkeysanctuary.co.za if you can offer a suitable home. This will leave space at the Sanctuary for donkeys arriving “on crutches”.

Mad shopping rush? Sore feet, grumpy children, no parking, noise, crowds? Avoid all this AND get a rebate from the Receiver of Revenue for your gifts! Adopt a donkey for loved ones (or for yourself). We take care of it all: no wrapping challenges, no wrong size or colour, no long queue to pay, and the gift lasts a whole year, while you are promoting a good cause. You choose how much you want to spend, once-off or monthly, fill in a form and we do the rest. You yourself will also receive all the reports and newsletters that go to the lucky recipient. Contact us at info@donkeysanctuary.co.za or go to http://www.donkeysanctuary.co.za/adopt-a-donkey.html

We appreciate ANY level of support: once-off or monthly. R50 buys carrots and apples as training treats, R100 buys a bale of lucerne or a hoof trim, R500 covers supplementary feed for an elderly donkey for two months, vet visits are always unplanned and often expensive but essential. We are also appealing for donations to build a shelter in the new field that we are developing, to take the pressure off our existing grazing and slowly accommodate more rescued donkeys.

Are you an enthusiastic knitter, sewer or crochet person? We have patterns for stuffed donkey toys that we sell in our shop. If you can donate your time and the materials, please contact us for patterns, or make up your own. We also welcome any donkey-themed items for our shop.

HOLIDAY TIMES

During the holiday season the Sanctuary will be open as usual from Thursdays to Sundays from 10am till 4pm.
We will also be open on Monday 17th December (10am to 4pm).

We look forward to your visit! We are dog-friendly, please keep Fido on his lead.

Please let us know in advance if your group is bigger than 6 people.

On very hot days and busy days we may suspend visits in the fields for a while – also to safeguard our Guides who often work outside all day. Please chat to the Guides on your arrival at the Sanctuary to see what the situation is. Thank you for understanding!

And while you are here don't forget to visit our restaurant. Our new Summer Menu includes:
  • Bacon Breakfast - Free range scrambled eggs, bacon, grilled tomato, roast potatoes, toast & jam
  • Veggie Breakfast (Our donkey’s choice) - Bruschetta topped with feta, leek and pea pesto with a fried egg
  • Potato Poppers - Potato wrapped in bacon, oven-roasted with parmesan, garlic, rosemary and served with a cheesy dip
  • Chicken Pie - served with fresh salad, tortilla chips and creamy paprika
  • Kiddies Snack Tray - seed bar, carrot sticks, oat balls, yoghurt & honey granola jar and cheesy straws
  • Apple & Banana Muffin - served with strawberry butter
  • Salted caramel ice-cream & choc wafer
Exciting news - besides our own three wines produced for us by Rooiberg Winery we will shortly be stocking craft beer from Saggy Stone - we will be able to serve you either Desert Lager or Califorina Steam Ale (the top favourites) and because we are licensed for both on and off consumption you can even take a 4-pack home with you.

Bequests

Bequests

Bequests form the backbone of the long-term sustainability of the Sanctuary.  Please consider leaving a lasting gift that will ease the suffering of these humble animals in years to come.  A bequest may be for any portion of your estate.  Please contact us – we can send you a leaflet with guidelines  about drawing up or adapting your will.
